scrappy pinwheels finished from Making A Lather

My Friday finish this week is scrappy pinwheels. I really enjoyed making this pattern and quilt. I started it in 2018 in an effort to use 2 1/2 inch scraps. It would be great for a jelly roll. One jelly roll would make it bigger than this one. I liked it so much, I recently cut another one in upcycled shirt fabrics.

60 x 68 = 14 yards

I quilted an overall paisley and used the backing for binding

pinwheels progress from Making A Lather

I have been sewing rows for my scrappy pinwheels quilt. The center is done and waiting for borders. I think I will keep it simple.

I have enjoyed making this pattern, so much so, that, I cut another, larger, quilt in shirt fabric. I guess I plan to live forever.

stash report 2/12/2023 from Making A Lather

I found these pieces of woven plaids at goodwill for 99 cents each. The regular price now for  up to 1 yard is 3.99.  2 yards or more is 5.99. Someone didn't like these and marked them 99. I like them so I snatched them up to take home.

stash report 2/5/2023 from Making A Lather

I don't have new fabric this week. I have been cutting scraps. I cut 1 1/2 inch strips at the last, if I can't cut anything larger. There was 1 pound 2 ounces of scraps in this size. If there are 3 yards in a pound, I have a little over 1 yard.

1 1/2 inch strips

When I have chunks, I cut them into 5 inch, 3 1/2 inch, 2 1/2 in, 2 inch, and 1 1/2 inch squares. I also will cut rectangles into 2 x 3 1/2 inch and ...

cut list progress from Making A Lather

I decided to make a cutting hit list for scrap management. You can read about it here. It has been a month. and, I am surprised at how much I have gotten done. I made a list of what I would need to cut for a few quilts in my ufo and maybe someday lists. With a pile of scraps, I move down the list and cut what I can to fill the need for these quilts.

It went from neat and tidy stacks to zip lock bags as I cut more and more. I am not worried about numbers ...

scrap cutting from Making A Lather

I blogged about making a cutting hit list here. And, I am surprised at how successful it has become. I was able to add to my projects on the list, and, I had a few leftover scraps to add to the scrap users system that has served me well for many years. I have a tray of 2 1/2, 2, and 1 1/2 inch strips.

I have a tray of 3 1/2 inch strips, 2 1/2 x 4 1/2  and 2 x 3 1/2 inch rectangles. I had a few smaller pieces that became ...

stash report April 3, 2022 from Making A Lather

I had a Friday group sew, and, I didn't have a project ready, so, I grabbed a scrap bag and my stripology ruler, and, I started cutting. I always have questions from others about my scrappy cutting and using. It seems a mystery to them. How do I store? how do I use? how do I make all those different colors go together? etc. One of my best quilting buddies saves scraps, too, but, in squares, not strips. I would prefer strips, and, I would be happy to cut them into squares when I need them. Otherwise, I am ...

stash february 6, 2022 from Making A Lather

I am sorting through blue strip bags looking for aqua/teal for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I have them all mixed together. Someday, I will have a bag for each...maybe.

My last stash report was Jan 23.At the time I was worried about the guild meeting.  Next week will be a challenge. We will have our guild meeting and there might be a free table. what will I do? Covid took care of that problem - So I haven't added any fabric to my stash this year so far.

stash january 23 2022 from Making A Lather

This week I worked on the last of the scraps from the  scrap bucket I am trying to tame. These scraps weighed  6 ounces which is almost a yard of fabric. I cut some 3 1/2 inches, then 2 1/2, 2, 1 1/2 and the rest went into a chunks bucket. It has helped to keep me from buying more of anything. Next week will be a challenge. We will have our guild meeting and there might be a free table. what will I do?

stash report jan16 2022 from Making A Lather

I found these lovilies in a scrap bucket I am trying to tame. I am not sure why a piece of yardage was in the bucket, unless there was a mass cleanup and everything went into a bucket. The rest of the scrap bucket had mostly really small pieces.

I sorted the scraps into piles of pieces that were big enough to cut of 10 in, 5 inch, strips, and chunks. I've only recently started cutting 10 inch pieces.

only 1 piece at least 10 inches.

After I cut the 10 inch piece I threw the left and right ...

rhododendron and scraps from Making A Lather

I cut and pieced the second clue of rhododendron mystery quilt this week. It doesn't look like much, but it was a lot of cutting and piecing. And I was off with my numbers and didn't have enough to finish the opposite colorway.

I did cut the rest of the wings.

I have been cutting scraps again. I can't take much of a break from scraps or they will overpower me.

I have a few ideas for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy next year that will use strings and crumbs.

10 inch -1 pound 4 ...

fabric scraps from Making A Lather

I am doing a bit of catch up on my rainbow projects for rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I had an idea to make a few words. This may be one of those squirrel projects. We will see.

I always have scraps to cut so I spent time googling how to organize my scraps instead of cutting them. LOL
I discovered I like what I am already doing, but it was good to realize that others share in the frustration. I have enough scraps to last a lifetime and never touch "real" fabric. But it is always messy.

crumb stars from Making A Lather

I have a 2 gallon zip lock bag of odds and ends and leftovers in blue, that I need to go through before I cut for my projects. waffle stamps were already cut, so, I could sew them for last week easily. I always enjoy an evening sorting and cutting scraps. Anything less than a fat quarter, I cut into my scrap user's sizes.

2 pound 5 ounces = 6 1/2 yards = $60.00

From chunks I cut 2 1/2 inch HSTS - ( half square triangles ) for my crumb stars. I made 6 crumb blocks so I needed 48 ...

shirt sandwiches from Making A Lather

I made shirt strings a while back aiming for a string x quilt for leftover pieces of shirts. This weekend I spent some time cutting fabric for the sides.

It is fun to think that there are no two alike. I didn't use a foundation. I just sewed strips into bigger pieces and trimmed to the size I wanted. I used 3 1/2 x 10 1/2.

I cut the strips 1 1/2 x 10 1/2. I am making a 7 x 9 setting.

This project is one step closer, but, not part of my goal ...

shirt triangles from Making A Lather

Sometimes, while cutting shirts into useable pieces, there are off cuts that are not really useful for big pieces. I tend to throw them into a bucket to deal with later. I was in the mood to sort and cut. Some of these pieces will be great for string or crumb blocks.

As I dug into the bucket, some just went into another bucket for strings, but, a few, I could cut into HSTS. Most of my goals this month involve the longarm, which is currently busy.  I had fun just playing in the scraps.

to do: this and that from Making A Lather

The new litterbug - how many masks do you count?

I have just been working on my country roads quilt top - trying to get it together. I have 16 rows together so far. I think I will need at least 4 more. And these are the longest rows. In between rows, I can sew leaders/and enders. It keeps me happy.

Angela at so scrappy let loose the color for January, early. We will be doing pink, so I have pulled the first project I want to do for that. Otherwise, it has been a little down time for sewing. I ...

shirt strings from Making A Lather

What do you do when making a block makes more small scraps?

Start a new quilt. I randomly sewed small pieces and strings together to make slabs of shirt fabric. I really didn't have a plan.. yet

Then, I remembered Bonnie Hunter's free string x pattern, and a version that I liked the colors. I started cutting my slabs into 3 1/2 x 10 1/2 rectangles.

I am on my way to using up all my bits and pieces... LOL that's a joke, of course.  I won't even see a dent. I am really ...

to do: cut purple from Making A Lather

We have had great weather and have enjoyed outdoors, and, even found a monarch on our flower tubs. We have planted milkweed in our yard, but, it hasn't bloomed. What a surprise to see our own monarch butterfly.

I have spent the month cleaning and sorting my purple scraps as part of the rainbow scrap challenge this month.  I had an entire wire basket of scraps in that color. Apparently, it had been a long time since I sorted through and organized it. I certainly didn't think I had that many scraps.
I don't like the ironing ...
